4yr Bay Arabian Gelding: "Bandera" came to our facility to overcome his over-reactive, unsafe, spooky/flighty behavior. He had been known to run through fences, spook from tractors, brooms sweeping an aisleway, tarps, farriers, pine cones falling from a tree. He had even hurt his owner from his over-reactiveness.
Bandera stayed at our facility for several months and overcame many of his fears. He was worked over all kinds of obstacles and on trails extensively. We grew his confidence in his handlers on the ground and in the saddle, and even himself. He is much less spooky, and when he does spooks, he spooks IN PLACE, instead of bolting or rearing or over-reacting. He can be trailered off property, worked in chaotic environments and he behaves the same as if he was on familiar property because of his relationship with the rider. He was one of the spookiest, most reactive horses that we have ever worked with. He has learned to spook in place and is now a SAFE RIDE ON THE TRAIL! Mission accomplished. He has a wonderful home and will continue learning and making progress with his new foundation.
2.5yr Bay Paso/QH Cross Gelding (ADOPTED from the HS/SCPA of Sumter County!): "Barbarosa" came to our facility to be started under saddle and learn some ground manners. He had a wonderful playful personality, but had learned to be a little pushy on the ground. He had never had any professional training, and had been entirely unhandled until he was about 1.5 - 2 years old.
Barbarosa was his owner's first horse, so they both learned a lot together, but did fabulously! Barbarosa stayed at our facility for several months, and we worked with both he and his new owner to establish ground manners on the ground manners, including bathing, tieing, fly spraying, leading, haltering, etc., work on obstacles, start him under saddle, and work on the trails. We are so proud of Barbarosa and his owner! They have learned so much and are doing great on their own now :)
2.5yr Paint Gelding: "Giovanni" came to our facility for some additional ride time and desensitization. He was a over-reactive to any movements under saddle, and was had a few other quirks on the ground when it came to tacking up. However, he had a great demeanor and laid-back personality. We brushed up his responsiveness under saddle, helped him overcome his over-reactiveness by building his confidence and giving him more opportunity to enjoy his rides by stimulating his mind, insteaad of doing monotonous tasks over and over again. After 30 days, he went home a much more responsive, yet not over-reactive horse. He was a great boy to work with and is now being used as a safe trail horse.
Palomino Yearling Gelding: "Brave" came to our facility from H.O.R.S.E. Inc. for just 2 weeks to establish some ground manners and learn that people were fun and interesting, and not "scary". He had not been handled much prior to being taken by the rescue, so he was still learning much of the basics. He was loading in a trailer, leading, picking up his feet, and easy to halter upon his return. He was a sweet boy and is maturing into a sweet boy. Thank you to H.O.R.S.E. Inc. for giving this boy an opportunity at life!
4-5yr Spotted Saddlebred Gelding: "Spidey" is a one-eyed, beautiful, very playful boy that came to our facility to be started under saddle. We worked him for several months on the ground, learning better manners and respect, on obstacles to build confidence, and then under saddle over obstacles and on the trails. He did wonderfully and can do everything that a two-eyed horse can do! He sidepasses, gives to pressure, rides in a rope hackamore or bit, goes over all the same obstacles that other horses do, and trail rides. We are very proud of Spidey, and very thankful that his owner gave him this opportunity! :)
7-8yr 14.2h Grey Arabian Gelding: Daddy-O came to us after he had been in foster care with the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County for about 2 years. He had been a stallion up until the HS/SCPA confiscated him, so he had some aggressive tendencies and he was very fearful of humans, so he was unapproachable. After roughly 30 days with us he learned to to enjoy being handled by humans, could be touched all over, picked up his feet for the farrier without sedation, and was started under saddle. He rides in a rope hackmore at a walk, trot, and canter, has great ground manmers, "catches his person" in the pasture (meaning he's very easy to catch), halters easily, respects space, ties, leads, lunges/circles, and loads nicely for trailering. He stands for mounting, gives to pressure, has great brakes, turns softly and has snappy transitions. He is a confident boy now and does well with tarps, tires, jumps, platforms, barrels, squeezes, gates and changes in terrain. He also is fine for fly spraying and bathing. We know what a great investment this was for the HS/SPCA and are thrilled that Daddy-O has a chance at life and an opportunity to succeed as a partner for his new home!
10-12yr 14h Grey Arabian Gelding: Casper was one of the first horses of the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County that we started working with. He was untouchable after about a year in foster care, but was in great health. He would behave aggressively if touched or handled out of fear. He had to be sedated to have his feet trimmed, or hadn't had his halter removed since arriving because it was very difficult to catch him again (if possible at all). After working with him lightly over the course of several months (just ONCE A WEEK for the most part), we established a great relationship with Casper on the ground and he became a very gentle, sweet, in-your-pocket boy. He learned respect, but confidence, and learned to back up by a slight pull on his tail, lunge/circle, back by a wiggle on the line, flex, give to pressure, accept the saddle/hackamore, stand to be mounted, and then we lightly started him under saddle. Once he had had 7 rides and understood the various gaits and leg pressure, we took him to an obstacle course clinic where he went through water, over a mattress, under a huge tarp, through firey flares, and stood while a gun was shot about 10ft from him. He did a great job and we are sooo proud of Casper! He was adopted shortly after! Congratulations Casper and his new owner!!
